George Hughes is Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo since 2012. Prior to Cal Poly he served as Chief of Police at the Colorado School of Mines. Chief Hughes began his career in public safety in 1992 with the Dayton Police Department. George has served diverse communities in both municipal and higher education settings in Ohio, Colorado, and California while holding various leadership roles. During his career George strived to build trust while fostering a holistic approach to public safety and community partnerships to address crime, the fear of crime, and quality of life at each community to create an inclusive and safe living, working, and learning environment.
George holds a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement from Ohio University, a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Colorado State University, and attended the Northwestern University’s school of Police Supervision and Command.
