About our Complaint Process
Community members are entitled to a transparent complaint processes and access to the DPS administration that serve them.
DPS provides a fair and uniformly applied administrative process for receiving, investigating and resolving all complaints of alleged personnel misconduct that is consistent with both the best practices in campus public safety/law enforcement and university policies and procedures.
Complaints against DPS employees may be filed through various channels:
- You may file a complaint directly with DPS by contacting the DPS watch commander or a field supervisor, through the DPS complaint form above, or through the DPS online anonymous complaint form.
- You may file a complaint independently through USC’s Report & Response website or by telephone at (213) 740-2500. Report & Response also allows for the anonymous reporting of concerns.
- You also may report directly to USC’s Office for Equity, Equal Opportunity and Title IX. The office’s responsibilities include conducting reviews and investigations of allegations of protected-class policy violations made by USC staff, faculty and students. Once an investigation has been completed by the appropriate office and a violation of a university or department policy has been determined, a Department Assistant Chief will review the case and determine a course of disciplinary and/or training action. You will receive a written response regarding the disposition of the investigation.
You should be aware that if you knowingly and maliciously file a false complaint of misconduct against an officer, that officer may seek monetary damages from you in a civil lawsuit.
Reporting Anonymously
Anonymous complaints may be submitted through the DPS online anonymous complaint form or USC’s Report & Response website. Please note that if you do not provide contact information, we may not be able to follow-up with you regarding our investigation or resulting action(s).
